Camping Sites in Flood Zones

Is it possible to have a camping or glamping site in a flood zone?

Yes! So long as certain precautions are taken.

Stamford Shepherd Huts stand 870mm above the ground enabling them to stay dry in floods. We also have our new Floating Shepherd Huts available to for deeper depths to guarantee a dry stay.

Flooding Season

50% of all flooding in the UK occurs between October and March.

35% between June and August…

The government quote, in the National Flood Risk Assessment, that less than 30cm is the most common depth of flood water followed by 30cm – 60cm and over 60cm.

Advice

• It is recommended to have a safe zone for vehicle parking when the site is flooded . Boats should be made available to visitors during these periods.
• Sewage tanks should float to not pollute flood water- surface standing tanks installed beneath the huts are recommended. Fully sealed tanks and pipework will not be compromised during a flood, so long that any vents are raised accordingly and that no unsecured manhole covers are present.
• Electricity cables should be at high levels and have slack if on the floating models where cables are likely to become submerged- water proof connections are also vital. Distribution boxes, hook-up points etc. should be at a suitable height.
• Water pipes are sealed and therefore of little concern. Any taps should be at sufficient height and have double check valves.
• Waste bins should be suitably raised.
• Hot tubs should also be at a sufficient height
• Outdoor furniture should be tethered at early signs of floods
